On Wednesday, January 22, an Ogun State High Court found 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo guilty of the murder of sex worker Asisat Akande and sentenced him to death by hanging.

After a furious fight about his failure to pay the whole agreed fee, Malomo, an ex-convict who had been released from prison a month before to the incident, allegedly stabbed the dead to death with a knife.

Malomo was found guilty of a single murder charge.

During the trial, he entered a not guilty plea to the charge.

Malomo was eighteen when he committed the crime in 2021.

In his ruling, Justice O. Ogunfowora stated that the prosecution had established Malomo’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you,” the judge held.

A.M. Adebayo, the State Prosecuting Attorney, had previously stated that the offender had committed the crime on July 18, 2021, at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Ori-Apata neighbourhood of Oke-Aregba in Abeokuta.

According to Adebayo, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, the prisoner selected the deceased sex worker Akande from the 3AD pub in the Panseke neighbourhood and brought her to his home for intercourse.

“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded for N10,000 which was their agreement, but he refused to give her the complete money saying he had N8,000,” he said.

“The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased ,which made the convict to bring out a knife from his pocket and stab her in the neck.

“The stab resulted in the instant death of the deceased.”

He mentioned that the convict planned to pick another girl for sex at the 3AD club in Panseke when he was apprehended by police officers.

However, he stated that the offence was punished under section 319 of the Criminal Code, laws of Ogun 2006, and violated section 316.
