Need to Control the Trend of Street Begging in Kwara State and Mitigate the Associated Security Risk.
The Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the state government to strengthen enforcement of the Street Begging Prohibition Law to address the growing issue and its negative impact on society.
This call to action was made during a plenary session, where lawmakers debated a motion titled “Need to Control the Trend of Street Begging in Kwara State and Mitigate the Associated Security Risk.”
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba, highlights concerns about the rising trend of street begging and its potential consequences.
Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, urging the Secretary to the State Government to establish a committee. This committee would assess the scope, root causes, and security implications of street begging and propose practical solutions.
Lawmakers stressed that unchecked street begging poses significant risks, including disruption of public order and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
They urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Community Development to form a community-based task force. This task force would identify beggars, facilitate their reintegration into society, and report recurring cases.
In a related move, the House conducted the first reading of a bill aimed at amending the state’s Secret Cults and Secret Societies Prohibition Law.
If passed, the bill would introduce stricter penalties for offenders and enhance public safety measures. These initiatives demonstrate the Assembly’s commitment to addressing pressing social issues and promoting a safer environment for Kwara State residents.
