The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended Adekolajo Aladeseyi, a self-styled traditional ruler, and four other chiefs for their alleged roles in an unauthorized installation ceremony. Aladeseyi claimed the position of Olujare of Ijare in the Ifedore Local Government Area.

The community’s kingmakers had previously voiced their disapproval of Aladeseyi’s installation and selection, characterising the procedure as deceitful.

The Olujare stool, a first-class kingship position, had been vacant since the demise of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun four years ago.

Without proper authorization, Aladeseyi proceeded with his installation as the Olujare on April 17, 2025. Plans were underway for him to undergo a 30-day traditional rite before the police intervened.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Olutokunbo Afolabi, confirmed the arrest, stating that it was necessary to maintain law and order in the community.

Afolabi emphasized that Aladeseyi’s installation lacked legal backing and approval from both the local and state governments. Four other suspects were also arrested alongside the self-proclaimed monarch.

The police commissioner assured that the suspects would face charges in court according to the law. This action aims to uphold the legal process and prevent similar unauthorized installations in the future.

The incident highlights the importance of adhering to traditional and legal protocols in matters of chieftaincy and kingship.

The state government’s swift action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that traditional institutions are respected and protected.
