Nigerian point-of-sale (POS) operators may soon raise their service fees after the Federal Government approved a 50% rise in telecom service rates.
Citing the effect of the fee hike on their activities, Ogungbayi Ganiyu, National Public Relations Officer of the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN), revealed this.
According to Ganiyu, mobile money agents’ transactions mainly depend on telecom services, especially data.
“The telecom tariff hike will impact the operations of our members. I am afraid this may also have a multiplier effect on service charges,” Ganiyu said.
He said that while POS operators may try to cover the additional expenses, the strain on their finances may eventually force them to increase rates in order to stay in business.
He said, “We haven’t sat down and looked at the latest tariff hike,” implying that more talks will decide the course of action.
