Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili made a remarkable debut at the Grand Slam Track in Miami, finishing third in the women’s 100m race with a time of 10.94 seconds. The event, which featured some of the world’s top talents, offered a $100,000 top prize for each event.

Ofili’s impressive performance came after she was drawn in lane two, competing against notable sprint stars like Gabby Thomas, the reigning Paris 2024 Olympic 200m champion, and Brittany Brown, the bronze medalist from the same Olympics. Despite clocking her first career sub-11s time in all conditions with 10.97s, Thomas settled for fourth, edging Jacious Sears in 10.98s.

The Grand Slam Track series brings together 96 top athletes across a three-day face-off, with a total of $12.6 million in prize money awarded across the slams each year. Each competitor earns points based on their finishing position in both races, and the competitor with the highest total number of points after completing both events will be crowned Slam Champion.

Ofili’s Future Prospects

The 22-year-old Nigerian sprinter will hope to stake more claims in the 200m event, having finished third in her debut. With her impressive performance, Ofili has shown promise for future events. The second leg of the slam will take place on May 30 to June 1 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, followed by the last leg on June 27-29 at UCLA’s Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.
