Family members and the administration of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, suffered tragedy on Monday after Oluwaseun Adeniyi, the hospital’s acting head of the audit department, killed himself by plunging into a well.

Shortly after dinner at his home in the Obantoko neighbourhood of the state’s Odeda Local Government Area in the Abeokuta city, Adeniyi committed suicide.

Source learnt that Adeniyi, who took over as Acting Head of the Audit Department of FMC two months ago, did not exhibit any signs of distress that would have led anyone to suspect such an act, even though security personnel and hospital management are still struggling to understand the motivation behind his actions.

Although there were rumours that the deceased had a history of mental illness, Segun Orisajo, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) at FMC, told the media about the tragic event that such suspicions could not be proven because Adeniyi did not exhibit such a tendency during his time working at the hospital.

According to source, one of the deceased’s children was set to marry in about a month before the tragic incident occurred.

His remains have been taken from the well and placed in a mortuary. “It was an unfortunate incident; the management feels saddened about this development,” Orisajo emphasised, expressing the hospital’s profound sadness over Adeniyi’s untimely demise.

“It is quite an irreparable loss,” Orisajo said, describing the late Adeniyi as “a hard-working and loyal staff member whose sudden death came as a shock to everyone at the hospital.”
