The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has lauded workers across the state for their unwavering commitment to the state’s development, emphasizing the legislature’s resolve to promote policies that protect and empower the labour force.

In a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Matthew Okache, Ayambem marked the 2025 International Workers’ Day with strong words of appreciation for civil servants, health professionals, educators, traders, farmers, security personnel, and artisans for their critical role in sustaining the social and economic fabric of the state.

“May 1st is not just a day of recognition but a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to building a better future through the tireless efforts of our workforce,” Ayambem stated. “Your sacrifices, hard work, and resilience are the bedrock of Cross River’s progress.”

The Speaker praised the workers for supporting the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, whose “People First” agenda has emphasized welfare-focused governance. He noted that the synergy between government and labour is crucial to policy success, urging continued cooperation to strengthen reforms that benefit the people.

Ayambem also underscored the importance of enacting laws that secure workers’ rights and economic dignity. He promised that the House of Assembly under his leadership would continue to prioritize legislation that advances fair employment, decent wages, and job security.

“As a House, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with labour unions and relevant stakeholders to ensure that the needs and aspirations of workers are not only heard but acted upon. We will not relent in championing economic justice through inclusive policies,” he said.

This year’s Workers’ Day celebration in Nigeria comes amid economic uncertainties, rising inflation, and ongoing demands for minimum wage adjustments from organized labour unions. In Cross River State, public and private sector workers have joined their voices in calling for more responsive governance, job creation, and improved workplace conditions.

In response to these concerns, Speaker Ayambem assured workers of proactive legislative interventions to align labour policy with global standards. He added that plans are underway to review existing labour-related bills in collaboration with trade unions to reflect the evolving needs of workers in the digital economy and post-COVID realities.

Workers across Calabar and other parts of the state welcomed the Speaker’s message with optimism, hoping it translates into concrete action. Some union leaders who spoke at the local Workers’ Day parades expressed satisfaction with the Speaker’s consistent engagement and openness to labour concerns.

Speaking at the May Day rally, a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Cross River State commended Ayambem for his inclusive approach, noting that legislative advocacy plays a key role in actualizing better working conditions and social protection for workers.

As Nigeria navigates an evolving labour landscape, the assurance from leaders like Speaker Ayambem offers a glimpse of hope to thousands of workers whose contributions power the wheels of state development.
