Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers has revealed that meeting Jose Mourinho during this season’s Europa League campaign was a special moment for him. Dessers, who was recently crowned Rangers’ top scorer for the 2024/25 season, reflected on memorable moments from his career in an interview with a Breda newspaper.
“I spoke to him (Mourinho) once in Italy after a match and when I play against him now, he recognises me. He even came to say hello after the game,” Dessers said. “I think that’s quite special. Especially when you consider a few years ago I was playing with NAC Breda away to Achilles ’29 in the Dutch second division! I was a Chelsea supporter as a child, so I really grew up with him.”
Dessers also highlighted his goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford during Rangers’ Europa League quarter-final run as a highlight of his season. “My goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford was, of course, the pinnacle,” he said. “My brother texted me after the match and said ‘Do you realise you’ve just scored at Old Trafford!’ You can also look back on that with pride after your career.”
Despite facing criticism throughout the season for missed chances, Dessers netted 24 goals across all competitions for Rangers, while also providing seven assists. He believes that playing for Rangers, Feyenoord, and NAC Breda has made his career successful due to the raw edge and passion associated with these clubs.
“There is a raw edge to each of these three clubs – Rangers, Feyenoord and NAC Breda,” he said. “That is something I like. Some like a fashionable or stately club, I like clubs where it is very pure and passionate. That is really reflected in these three clubs.”
Dessers’ impressive performances earned him the prestigious Sam English Bowl at the Rangers Player Awards Ceremony, succeeding captain James Tavernier. Despite a rollercoaster season, Dessers showed commendable resilience, fighting back to claim a starring role under manager Barry Ferguson. His dedication and hard work have paid off, making him a key player for Rangers.
