In a bold stride toward reshaping the infrastructural landscape of Kano State, the Kano State Executive Council has approved a total of N51.5 billion for capital projects aimed at revitalizing critical infrastructure and enhancing public service delivery. This landmark decision was disclosed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, following the 27th Executive Council meeting held on April 28, 2025.

The approved fund will finance several major projects under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, with a focus on roads, traffic systems, public building renovations, and energy infrastructure. The decision reflects the administration’s commitment to sustainable urban renewal and inclusive development across Kano’s urban and rural areas.

One of the most prominent allocations in the approval is the release of N5.4 billion for the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of key roads, including Mumbayya House to Tal’udu Junction, Gadon Kaya, Yahaya Gusau Road, and Sharada Road. These roads are critical to Kano’s intra-city transportation, and their revamp is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity.

In addition, the Council approved funding for the construction of Miller Road to Mission Road, an area heavily relied upon for both residential and commercial traffic. The road projects form a significant part of the Kano Urban Renewal initiative.

Further supporting urban mobility, the state government approved N3.4 billion for the installation of wireless solar-powered traffic lights in metropolitan Kano. The solar-powered systems are expected to promote energy efficiency, reduce traffic gridlocks, and contribute to road safety in line with global smart city trends.

The move also positions Kano as a leader among Nigerian states in integrating renewable energy into urban infrastructure.

In line with efforts to strengthen the state’s public institutions, part of the funds will be used for the renovation and modernization of key public facilities. This includes the Kano Educational Resources Department, which plays a pivotal role in curriculum development and teacher training.

The Governor’s Lodge in Kaduna will also undergo refurbishment to enhance its usability as a governmental liaison center.

Significantly, N1.46 billion has been earmarked for upgrading and modernizing the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy located at the Sharada Phase I Industrial Layout. The project is aimed at equipping the ministry to effectively implement and monitor renewable energy initiatives that will reduce Kano’s dependency on the national grid and expand access to electricity in underserved areas.

“This is a strategic investment that aligns with Governor Yusuf’s vision of a green, self-sustaining Kano driven by renewable energy and smart infrastructure,” said Dawakin-Tofa.

Analysts say this development signifies a shift in Kano’s capital spending priorities toward long-term infrastructural transformation. The projects are expected to generate employment during construction phases and improve the quality of life for millions of Kano residents upon completion.

Governor Yusuf’s administration has consistently emphasized inclusive growth, and this latest move underscores its intent to deliver dividends of democracy through tangible development.

The projects are anticipated to commence immediately, with oversight mechanisms reportedly being put in place to ensure quality execution and timely delivery.

As Nigeria’s second-largest commercial hub, Kano’s renewed investment in infrastructure could serve as a model for other states in harnessing capital budgets to foster development and improve governance outcomes.
