The committee’s primary task is to review and develop comprehensive recommendations to tackle the underlying causes of frequent road traffic accidents involving trailer and tanker drivers.

The federal government has established a special committee with the mission of determining and addressing the underlying factors that contribute to the occurrence of traffic accidents on the country’s highways.

This was revealed on Monday, April 28, 2025, during a stakeholders’ meeting at the ministry’s conference room in Abuja by Senator Saidu Alkali, the Minister of Transportation.

In order to guarantee that trailer and tanker drivers across the country satisfy safety and professional requirements, the minister has stated that the committee’s role includes investigating the possibility of establishing national training and certification programs.

“This committee’s primary task is to review and develop comprehensive recommendations to tackle the underlying causes of frequent road traffic accidents involving trailer and tanker drivers.

“We must implement practical solutions that enhance safety and prevent these tragic and avoidable incidents.

“These incidents are not just statistics — they represent lives lost, properties destroyed, and families shattered. This must stop.”

A week has been allotted to the committee to present its recommendations and conclusions.

The committee is comprised of a diverse coalition of stakeholders, such as the Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Driving School Association of Nigeria (DSAN), the Female Drivers Association (FDA), the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), and the Institute of Driving Inspectors of Nigeria (IDIN).

A new age of discipline, safety knowledge, and professionalism among drivers of heavy-duty vehicles will be ushered in by the committee’s efforts, according to Janet McDickson, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry.
