The governor will also be dissolving his cabinet to accommodate other APC members
Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently dominating the political landscape.
Following a meeting that took place behind closed doors at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, the statement was later made.
The decision was made following “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development,” according to Sir Festus Ahon, the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, who confirmed the move through a phone conversation.
It was in the interest of Delta State’s long-term development that the decision was reached to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was obtained after lengthy deliberations with political stakeholders.
Political observers are already interpreting the meeting between senior APC officials and Governor Oborevwori, who won the 2023 governor’s race on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, as a strategic realignment with far-reaching consequences leading up to the 2027 general election.
The governor is also planning to disband his cabinet soon in order to create place for new appointments, which may include members from the APC, according to a principal officer of the State House of Assembly who attended the meeting and talked to SaharaReporters on the condition of anonymity.
“In a few days’ time, the governor will also be dissolving his cabinet to accommodate other APC members,” the source said.
“The arrangement will be a 60/40 thing. The APC will take 40 while the PDP will take 60 in the new cabinet to be formed in the shortest possible time. As we move on, other things and plans will be unveiled. The 60/40 will also be applied in the structure of the state party.”
