Fubara has promised to make some compromises. Negotiations are ongoing

Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, met with President Bola Tinubu in London. The Africa Report confirmed that Governor Fubara, who took office in May 2023, insisted on the meeting.

This was the first in-person meeting since Tinubu removed Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, from office on March 18 by using Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The specifics of the meeting have not been confirmed as neither side disclosed specific details. However, the presidential aides who spoke on condition of anonymity, the discussions centered on the prospect of Fubara taking office again before the end of his six-month ban, though neither side provided specifics.

“It is true. Governor Fubara held a private meeting with the president last week.

“Fubara has promised to make some compromises. Negotiations are ongoing, but from all indications, his suspension will be lifted before the six-month deadline.”

On Monday evening marked the President’s return to Abuja following an 18-day trip overseas. Nyesom Wike, Fubara’s estranged political godfather and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, was apparently uncomfortable with such talks occurring without him attending the meeting, according to report.

Recall that on Tuesday March 18, President Bola Tinubu announced a state of emergency in Rivers state due to the political crises and instability that has been plaguing the state.

Additionally, Tinubu placed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and other members of the Rivers assembly, under suspension for a term of six months.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who had previously served as Chief of Naval Staff, was also appointed by Tinubu to serve as the sole administrator for a period of six months.

On Thursday, March 20, the National Assembly adopted the proclamation and gave it its final approval.
