
Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax and Spanish La Liga outfit Real Betis have sent birthday wishes to their former Nigerian star Finidi George, who turned 54 on Tuesday. Both clubs sent their birthday greetings via their X handles.
“Happy birthday, Finidi,” Betis wrote, while Ajax stated, “Happy birthday, Finidi George!”
Born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Finidi played for Calabar Rivers, Iwuanyanwu (now Heartland), and Sharks before joining Ajax in 1993. At Ajax, he won three Eredivisie titles, two Johan Cruyff Shields, and a UEFA Champions League title, among other honors.
Finidi later moved to Real Betis, helping the club finish fourth in the league in his first season. He also played a crucial role in Betis’ Copa del Rey final appearance in 1997.
Finidi’s impressive career includes playing for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, featuring in two World Cups and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 1994 AFCON.
After retiring as a player, Finidi transitioned to coaching, leading Enyimba to the Nigeria Premier League title in 2023. He was later appointed coach of the Super Eagles, managing two competitive matches.
