Leaders can’t sit elsewhere and decide for us. Someone in Agege shouldn’t determine Ojokoro’s leadership
The All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders meeting that took place on Monday in Ojokoro Local Local Council Area, Lagos State, was marred by turmoil due to claims that a chairmanship candidate was imposed on the group.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), following the calm beginning of the meeting at 7, Ijaoye Street at 4:00 p.m., members who were dissatisfied with the meeting stormed the venue in order to express their displeasure.
During the demonstration, protesters screamed “Ole” and “We can’t take it.” They also accused Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, of pushing a candidate from Agege on the People of Ojokoro.
Mr. Olusegun Akinoso-Olawaye, a protester who spoke after the incident, claimed that the meeting’s stated goal was to confirm a council-unaffiliated candidate who had been imposed on the group.
He said a candidate for chairperson had to be a long-time Ojokoro resident, party employee, and political activist. The imposition of a foreigner with no prior experience in Ojokoro’s electoral process, he said, would lead to undesirable outcomes.
He said, “We are here to reject imposition. All aspirants deserve a fair contest to prove their political relevance.”
Another protester said, “We must not sell our seat to outsiders. A stranger cannot come and lead us in our own home.
“Leaders can’t sit elsewhere and decide for us. Someone in Agege shouldn’t determine Ojokoro’s leadership.”
Mr. James Owolabi, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented the Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency and a steadfast member of the APC in Ojokoro acknowledged the concerns and affirmed the right of the party members to protest within the party and advised protesters to maintain a peaceful demeanor and refrain from resorting to violence in response.
