The referenced Supreme Court judgment did not in any way challenge or override the decisions made at that convention

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has made claims asserting that the Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, is unlawfully occupying office. The Labour Party has categorically denied these allegations.

In a statement that was issued by Marcel Ngogbehei, Director General of the Labour Party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, the party made it clear that Abure was legitimately elected during the Labour Party’s National Convention that took place on March 27, 2024.

Since the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 4th, which overturned a previous ruling that recognized Julius Abure as the national chair of the Labour Party, the leadership crisis has intensified. Disputed parties have read the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold their own interests and the claims of those claiming to be the party’s rightful chair.

The national chairmanship of the Labour Party remains Abure, according to Ngogbehei, since no decision by the Supreme Court has invalidated it. He made it clear that the 2024 convention followed the party’s bylaws and the Electoral Act’s requirements, and that the results of the election are still legally enforceable.

“It is both surprising and disappointing that an organization that claims to advocate for rule of law and democratic principles would issue such a misguided position.

“The referenced Supreme Court judgment did not in any way challenge or override the decisions made at that convention.”

Misleading statements could inflame political tensions and encourage institutional disobedience, thus he warned HURIWA to consult with competent attorneys before making any public pronouncements. He pleaded with party members to refrain from spreading misinformation that would damage the party’s democratic leadership.
