Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday for using N43.5 billion in public funds to purchase opulent backup cars, should prepare for a bumpy ride as anti-graft officials stand by ready to arrest and question him as soon as he lands in Nigeria from the United States of America.

According to Supreme Court Records, Mudashiru Obasa is not a lawyer.

After being impeached on Monday on charges of embezzling ₦43.5 billion in public monies, Mudashiru Obasa, the troubled former Speaker of the Lagos public House of Assembly, is expected to come under close examination from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to source, Obasa, who was impeached following a damning report by the platform that highlighted his extravagant expenditures on expensive backup cars, is anticipated to be detained when he returns to Nigeria from the United States.

Speaking under anonymity, an EFCC insider stated, “The evidence against him is overwhelming. This time, he won’t be able to wriggle out. The case has been meticulously compiled, and we are ready to take action.”

Obasa, who had previously been the subject of an EFCC investigation in 2020 for allegedly spending ₦1.1 billion in a single week, was exonerated of all allegations. But this time, authorities think he has little chance of avoiding indictment.

“Heavy hammer is waiting to fall on him,” the source added, emphasizing the agency’s resolve to ensure accountability.

The EFCC has guaranteed that there will be no disruptions in its plans to apprehend Obasa upon his arrival.

“We have no political interference at all. He will clarify things to our detectives,” The EFCC source stated.

Regarding the former speaker’s anticipated return date to Nigeria and any possible run-ins with anti-graft officials once there, a Mr. Obasa spokesperson declined to comment.

An EFCC spokesperson avoided discussing the agency’s agreement prior to Mr. Obasa’s return to the nation.

Following his impeachment on Monday, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President declined to comment on his interactions with Mr. Obasa.
