They NERC are the one who does regulation, monitoring and enforcement. There is nothing we can do on – IBEDC

On Friday, the youths of Omu-Aran, which is located in the Irepodun local government area of Kwara State, staged a demonstration against Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over what they referred to be excessive billing and the sudden transition of the community’s power billing system from Band C to Band A.

They were led by two masquerades through their demonstration. Placards bearing a variety of statements were spotted being carried by the demonstrators as they gathered at the Bareke Roundabout in the city.

They were also seen dancing and chanting songs about the conflict. “Omu-Aran Says No to Band A,” “Bring Back to Band C,” and “Revert Omu-Aran to Band C” are few of the statements that are written on the placards.

With regard to the ridiculous bills that were received for the month of March in the year 2025, the youths were of the opinion that the sudden change in the billing for the electricity from Band C to Band A was the main cause.

As part of the demonstration, the youths went to prominent locations in the neighborhood, including the Olomu Market, Latinwo Market Area, Olomu palace, and the District headquarters of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), which is situated within the Omu-Aran City Complex location.

A number of key highways that lead to neighboring states were also blocked by the demonstrators. These routes included the Omu-Aran-Kabba Highway and the Omu-Aran-Otun-Ekiti Highway, which caused traffic for many hours.

According to a statement signed by Omu-Aran Development Association President Niyi Adeyeye and Elder Ranti Adebayo, their requests included replacing damaged transformers that caused uneven electrical delivery in critical community areas. Reverting billing from Band A to Band C, improving electricity supplies, suspending Band A billings, and reviewing current rates to match the old billing system.

Independent review of IBEDC service delivery in Omu-Aran to determine the tariff regime classification, an immediate stop to overdraft purchases on pre-paid meters, and a stop to electricity consumers buying materials for faulty equipment.

In response to the matter, the IBEDC Kwara State Communication Officer, Mr. Gbenga Ajiboye, stated that the NERC continued to be solely responsible for the matter of power regulation.

“They NERC are the one who does regulation, monitoring and enforcement. There is nothing we can do on.”
