Daniyal Matthews, the newly crowned 2025 South African National Road Champion, is set to make his mark at the aQuellé Tour Durban Road race on April 27, donning his SA champion’s jersey. Matthews made history by becoming the first cyclist of color to claim the elite men’s title, and he will be looking to build on his momentum at the Tour Durban.

The 2025 SA National Road Champion will be supported by a strong Team Siata squad, sponsored by Hulamin, which includes prominent riders like Matome Machaba and Marius Coutaud. The team will take part in the road race on Sunday, April 27, which starts and finishes outside Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Matthews’ victory at the SA Championships was a surprise to many, as he was part of an early breakaway that worked together to establish a big lead over the first half of the 165km course. He then powered away from Casper Kruger up a climb and sprinted to the title, making full use of his track racing experience.

“It was an incredible day for both myself and Team Siata,” Matthews said. “It was unbelievable. While sprinting, I kept thinking, ‘Wow, this is actually happening’. It’s an incredible honour to wear the national stripes for the next year, and I’m excited for the opportunities this victory might bring.”
