The Rivers State Police Command has formally opened an investigation into the alleged assault of several journalists during the recent #TakeItBackProtest held in Port Harcourt. This follows a strong-worded petition by the Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). They are demanding justice and an apology. They also seek a commitment to protect press freedom going forward.
The NUJ, in its complaint to the Command, condemned the unprovoked Journalists assault aggression by police officers. These officers attacked reporters on lawful duty. The union issued a threat. They would boycott all police-related events in Rivers State. The authorities have 14 days to address the issue.
In response, the Rivers State Police Command issued a statement. The statement came through its Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko. It condemned the reported assault. The statement emphasized the media’s vital role in a democratic society.
“The Rivers State Police Command has received the complaints from our strategic partner, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, with concern. The complaints are regarding the alleged assault on its members. This alleged assault was by some police officers during a recent planned protest,” the statement read.
The Command confirmed that a full-scale investigation had commenced. It added that some of the officers involved had already been identified. These officers were undergoing internal questioning. “Preliminary findings have led to the identification of some personnel who are currently undergoing questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry,” it stated.
The police acknowledged the critical role journalists play. They promote peace, transparency, and democratic values through their reporting. Their public enlightenment efforts are also vital. SP Iringe-Koko reassured both the NUJ and the general public. The Command remains committed to protecting the rights of journalists. It ensures their safety during public events.
“We value the longstanding relationship and collaborative efforts shared with the NUJ and regret any actions that may have strained this bond,” she said.
The Command further clarified its involvement during the #TakeItBackProtest, stating that officers were deployed to provide adequate security to all participants, including members of the press.
“Our presence at the scene was instrumental in preventing criminal elements from hijacking what was intended to be a peaceful protest,” the statement emphasized.
However, the police also distanced themselves from what they described as “overzealous conduct” by some officers. “We dissociate ourselves from any form of overzealous or unprofessional conduct and reiterate our zero-tolerance stance on such behavior.”
The Rivers State NUJ expressed deep disappointment at the incident, highlighting a rising trend of police brutality toward journalists across Nigeria. The union insists that freedom of the press is non-negotiable and must be protected.
“Our members were carrying out their professional responsibilities when they were attacked, harassed, and intimidated. Such behavior cannot be tolerated in a democratic setting,” the union said in a follow-up statement.
The NUJ’s stance aligns with views from national and international press freedom organizations. These organizations have increasingly raised alarms over the shrinking civic space in Nigeria. They are also concerned about the rise in threats against media workers.
This incident is just one of several recent cases of journalist harassment in Nigeria. In 2024 alone, multiple reporters were attacked during protests, political rallies, and election coverage. Press advocates have called for stricter enforcement of existing laws that protect journalists and a comprehensive training reform for security agencies on civil engagement.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Nigeria ranks among the most dangerous countries in Africa for reporters due to a combination of government intimidation, police violence, and the impunity often granted to perpetrators.
The Rivers State Police Command has pledged transparency in the ongoing investigation and assured that findings will be made public. The Command also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, empathy, and respect for human rights while urging the media and the public for continued cooperation.
As the investigation continues, many in the press community await tangible outcomes, including disciplinary actions against the officers involved and policy reforms that prioritize journalist safety.
This incident serves as a litmus test for Nigeria’s commitment to upholding freedom of the press and ensuring that those who report the truth can do so without fear of assault or intimidation.
