On Monday, Nigerian citizens of Oyo State flocked to the streets to protest against the contentious Cybercrime Act and call for its swift repeal.

The majority of the protesters were young people who identify as members of the pro-democracy, Take It Back Movement.

They said that the government is using the law as a tool to censor journalists, criminalize free expression, and crush dissent.

Amidst a significant police presence, young Nigerians calmly assembled at the Iwo Road demonstration in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

A protester said, “We should not allow anybody to take away our freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

“Because the moment they succeed, they take away our voices. They take away the right to ask questions. They take away the right to challenge injustice. This is why we urge all Nigerians to join this protest.”
