The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing talents discovered at the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF). The festival, which began on April 1 and will end on April 8 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has attracted over 3,000 athletes and 500 officials from across the nine mandate states.

Focus on Grassroots Development
According to Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Co-Chairman of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), the festival’s focus is on identifying potential talents that can be groomed for future success, rather than just recognizing winners.

“This festival is not about who came first or who won gold,” Ikpokpo said. “Our Scouts are looking out for hints of potential, quality that can be groomed for future success.”

Identifying and Nurturing Talents
The scouts, comprising coaches, former athletes, and scouts, have submitted 64 names of identified athletes, most of whom did not necessarily come first or second in their respective events. Ikpokpo revealed plans to set up camps for these athletes, where they will undergo scientific research-based training supervised by certified coaches.

“The real work is not this festival,” he added, “it is to design and implement the plan to nurture the talents discovered here to go on and replace those who have been representing Nigeria.”

NDDC’s Role in Sports Development
The NDDC’s commitment to developing sports talents in the Niger Delta region is evident in its sponsorship of the NDSF. By providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and receive training, the NDDC aims to improve the living conditions of people in the nine mandate states.

The NDDC’s efforts to develop sports talents in the Niger Delta region are a step in the right direction, and the success of the NDSF will likely have a positive impact on the region’s sports landscape, Nigeria and the world as a while.
