The FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FG has put forth a number of individuals for the position of ambassadorial appointment. These individuals include Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who served as governors of the states of Abia and Enugu respectively, Senator Shehu Sani, and Reno Omokri, who was a former assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In anticipation of the list being made public, they were among the individuals who were being inspected by security personnel.

The ambassadors of the country were removed from their positions without being replaced, which triggered fears about the impact that this would have on Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts.

A comprehensive review of the nation’s foreign policy was conducted by President Bola Tinubu in September 2023, which resulted in the recall of over 83 envoys. Since then, the Federal Government has not nominated any ambassadors.

Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Tinubu, who had previously discussed the delays, stated that the nominees for ambassadorial jobs need to be thoroughly examined before a final list is sent to the National Assembly.

Onanuga said, “Don’t forget that the ambassadorial list has two components. There are career ambassadors and political ambassadors. The foreign affairs list and the consolidated list will still go through certain processes before they are released.”

A Presidency official confirmed anonymously to Vanguard that, “They (those appointed) are already doing security checks with the Department of State Service, DSS.

“When they have cleared security checks, we will release the list. Only those who have been cleared are announced. The process is ongoing. I know we should have a list before the end of this month.”
