Protests against these attacks have erupted in recent times in different states across Nigeria, with demonstrators expressing anger over the government’s perceived inaction and inability to protect citizens from violence. These protests can be characterized by calls for better security measures, justice for victims of herdsmen attacks, and accountability for those responsible for the violence.
There have been ongoing and escalating tensions in Nigeria concerning attacks by herdsmen, particularly in the Middle Belt region, where conflicts over land and resources frequently occur. These clashes often involve Fulani herdsmen and farming communities, driven by competition for land, water, and pasture.

The persistent attacks by herdsmen have become a grave concern for the people of Benue, particularly within the Benue South region. This ongoing violence has led to widespread fear and insecurity among the communities, prompting a series of protests against these unchecked aggressions.
A massive protest is ongoing in Otukpo, Benue South Senatorial District, over alleged insecurity.
“Otukpo is the headquarters of the ancient Idoma people, with seven Local Government Areas of Benue South.”
It was learned that youths trooped to the streets and barricaded all routes going in and out of Otukpo.
“Otukpo town also served as a gateway to Enugu in the east and Lafia in the north.”
The protest has created a heavy traffic gridlock as a result of the barricades.
“Security agents were seen pleading with the youth to open up the barricades for free flow of traffic.”
Agatu, Ado, Okpokwu, Otukpo, and Ogbadigbo Local Government Areas – all in Benue South – have been under sustained herdsmen attacks.
“Many people have been killed and property worth millions destroyed.”
The relentless nature of these attacks has left communities in disarray, with families mourning their lost loved ones while grappling with considerable losses. The situation underscores the urgent need for intervention measures to restore peace and security in Benue State, allowing the people to reclaim their lands and livelihoods from the devastation wrought by these attacks.
The situation is further complicated by ethnic, religious, and socio-economic factors that fuel the conflict, leading to a cycle of retaliation and violence. Humanitarian impacts are severe, with many people displaced and affected by the ongoing strife. Community leaders, civil society organizations, and activists continue to demand government intervention and a comprehensive approach to resolving the underlying issues contributing to the crisis.

Engaging in dialogues, providing support to affected communities, and addressing the root causes of the conflicts are essential steps needed to alleviate tensions in the region.
