The Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) has said a wave of hot weather is set to sweep across the country this April, bringing significant thermal discomfort to most regions, according to the latest meteorological outlook.
The central and northern states face heightened risks of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, while the southern regions will also contend with notable heat stress.

Temperature ProjectionsTemperatures are expected to soar, with the northern states reaching between 38°C and 42°C, the central states ranging from 36°C to 40°C, and the south experiencing 32°C to 36°C. Coastal areas will see warmer-than-average conditions, while the central and northern regions will hover slightly above normal for this time of year.
Rainfall Patterns
Precipitation will vary widely across the country. The heaviest rainfall, between 300 and 400 millimeters, is forecast for Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, Anambra, and Cross River. Other southern states can expect 200 to 300 millimeters, while central states will see 100 to 200 millimeters. The northern states, however, are projected to receive a scant 0 to 50 millimeters, exacerbating dry conditions in the region.
Health and Safety Alerts
Authorities have issued several warnings in response to the forecast. In the south, as well as parts of Kwara, Kogi, and Benue, increased rainfall and humidity are likely to boost mosquito activity, raising the risk of malaria. Meanwhile, the extreme north is on alert for potential meningitis outbreaks due to favorable conditions. Heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, are a major concern for the central and northern regions, where temperatures will peak.
Public Safety Recommendations
Officials urge residents to take precautions: stay hydrated, limit time in direct sunlight, use mosquito nets and repellents, and adhere to local health and weather advisories.
