Ekpeyong Okon resigned 48 hours after Emana Amawhe, who was the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate for the general elections in 2024, also resigned from the party

A further intensification of political upheavals inside Cross River State has occurred as a result of Margaret Ekpeyong Okon’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where she served as the Assistant State Women Leader—South.

It is only 48 hours since Emana Amawhe, who was the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate for the general elections in 2024, also resigned from the party.

Okon expressed her thanks for the opportunity she had while serving the party in a letter that she delivered to the Ward Chairman of the Edem Odo Ward in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area.

She highlighted her career from being a member of the ward executive to being a councillor, and most recently, she spoke about her position as a member of the state executive council and assistant state women leader for the South.

Okon said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the party in various capacities, from being a Ward Exco member to serving as a Councillor, and most recently, as a member of the State Executive Council/ Assistant State Woman Leader, South; a position I have held until today.

“These experiences have been invaluable, and I deeply appreciate the trust and support I received throughout my journey.”

Moreover, Okon mentioned that the experiences she had during her time in the PDP would have a significant impact on her future endeavors.

She also mentioned that she is still dedicated to helping her community and advocating for growth. Within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), internal realignments are still taking place, and her departure is another key shift in the state’s political landscape. This comes after Emana Amawhe’s departure.
