Dele Momodu, a prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, has condemned President Bola Tinubu‘s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it “anti-democratic.” Momodu criticized Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, saying it contradicts the democratic principles Tinubu once championed.
Dele Momodu, who spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, urged Tinubu to reconsider his approach, saying, “I’m pleading with President Bola Tinubu, ‘Please don’t kill democracy in Nigeria.'” He emphasized that Tinubu’s move is embarrassing, given his past contributions to democracy. “We were together in exile, and he fought gallantly for this democracy. So, a lot of us, co-comrades at that time, are actually very embarrassed that we have a pro-democracy leader in government. Yet what we are witnessing is worse than dictatorship,” Momodu said.
Momodu stressed the importance of democracy in Nigeria, highlighting its role in promoting stability, economic growth, and human rights. He warned that undermining democracy could have severe consequences, including social unrest, economic instability, and a decline in investor confidence.
The international community has been watching the situation in Nigeria closely, with many expressing concern over the implications of Tinubu’s actions. The United States, the European Union, and other major powers have emphasized the importance of respecting democratic principles. They insist on adhering to the rule of law.
Momodu also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of intimidating the opposition. He warned that this behavior could undermine the democratic process. The APC should respect the opposition’s rights. They must engage in constructive dialogue to address the country’s challenges.
Momodu advised Tinubu to focus on doing his job well to guarantee a second term, without resorting to intimidation. “He should just do his job. The only thing that can guarantee a second time is to do your job well. You do not need to intimidate anybody,” Momodu stated.
The situation in Nigeria is a cause for concern, with many fearing that the country’s democratic progress is under threat. Dele Momodu’s call to action is timely. It reminds us of the importance of respecting democratic principles. It also highlights the need for adherence to the rule of law. As the situation continues to unfold, all stakeholders must work together. Their collaboration is essential to promote stability, economic growth, and human rights in Nigeria.
