Mother and Child are guilty of the two-count charge of conspiracy and theft of dry ponmo, stock fish, and dried meat that was brought against them

A woman named Falilatu Amidu and her daughter named Ayisatu were each given a sentence of six months in prison by a Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, yesterday.

The charges against them were for stealing dry ponmo, stock fish, and dried meat with a combined worth of one million Nigerian naira.

A two-count charge of conspiracy and theft was brought against the defendants, who reside in the Ago-Oko neighborhood of Abeokuta and were found guilty of both charges.

The information was provided to the court by the prosecution, Insp. Kehinde Fawunmi, who stated that the defendants committed the offense at the Lafenwa market in the month of August 2024.

According to Fawunmi, Falilatu and her daughter Ayisatu plotted to take a large sack from Mrs. Kafayat Alao, which contained stock fish, dry ponmo, and dried cow meat, and had a value of N1 million. Mrs Alao relied on Falilatu, one of the defendants, to transport goods from her Lafenwa store to the location where she sells them.

“The complainant asked her to help her pick some goods from the store. She waited for over an hour and did not see the defendant, which made her to go to the store to check on her.

“On getting to the store, she did not find Falilatu, and she noticed a big bag containing dried meat, ponmo and stock fish was missing while the defendant was nowhere to be found.”

Further explanation was provided by Fawunmi, who stated that Falilatu had stolen the things and then given them to her daughter, Ayisatu, to sell. According to him, Ayisatu received the items from her mother at a time when she was aware that they had been stolen.

According to the prosecutor, the offense committed was in violation of sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006.

Odumosu handed down a punishment that included a six-month prison sentence for both the mother and the girl, as well as the option of a fine of N5,000.

Before giving the N5,000 fine option, she issued an order that each convicted individuals should first make restitution to the complainant by returning N100,000.
