Over 35,000 Nigerians had signed a petition on Change.org, requesting that justice be served for the death of Bumpa co-founder
Apprehension has been voiced by a number of Nigerians in response to the untimely passing of Adetunji Opayele, commonly known as Teejay, who was a co-founder of the technology startup company Bumpa.
On March 4, 2025, the 31-year-old man was riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe in Victoria Island, Lagos, when he was involved in an accident. He was on his way from the gym at the time.
During the process of merging onto the expressway, the driver, Biola Adams-Odutayo, allegedly failed to cede the right of way, he hit and knocked Teejay out of the road and left him unconscious.
As of the time that this article was filed, more than 35,000 Nigerians had signed a petition on Change.org, requesting that justice be served. The incident has caused considerable resentment around the country.
The lawsuit alleges that Adams-Odutayo, who is a healthcare practitioner, did not provide assistance to Teejay despite the fact that he was in a critical situation.
The petition further asserts that when she was requested for assistance, she said that she did not want blood to dirty her vehicle.
As a consequence of this, witnesses made an effort to transport Teejay to a hospital; nevertheless, it have been reported that multiple medical facilities refused to treat him. He was eventually admitted to a different hospital, where he was pronounced dead after midnight by the medical staff.
Adams-Odutayo was taken into custody and charged with reckless driving; however, he was released on bail.
A significant number of Nigerians are advocating for more severe charges, such as manslaughter, rather than the accusation of reckless driving.
On Twitter (X), many users shared their outrage. @iamrenike tweeted, “Biola Adams-Odutayo took my friend from me. She hit him with her car and refused to take him to the hospital because she didn’t want blood to stain her car seats. Now she’s trying to escape justice. Please sign this petition.”
@DavidLawani pointed out the hypocrisy, writing, “It’s shocking that she’s also in the health sector and could have helped if she wanted to.”
@Wohswobi shared a poignant reminder of the consequences of negligence: “A brilliant life was stolen by negligence. Adetunji Opayele (Teejay), the co-founder of Bumpa, was left to die. Kindly sign and share this petition to demand justice.”
@SeyiOwolabi9 noted, “Teejay was coming from a gym, not a club. Yet, someone drove recklessly and killed him, refusing to help. No empathy, even as a health professional.”
@JachimmaNN was equally outraged, writing: “This wicked woman cannot go scot-free after killing Teejay. The rich get away with too much in this country. What kind of person has no regard for human life?!”
