In a bid to restore normalcy and alleviate the suffering of residents, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the relaxation of the previous 24-hour curfew to 17 hours in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin communities, which were recently embroiled in violent communal clashes. The new curfew will start at 2 pm and end at 7 am the following day, effective from Friday, March 28, 2025, until further notice

The communal clash initially started as a boundary dispute between the Ifon and Ilobu communities and later spread to Erin Osun. The state government was forced to review the earlier 12-hour curfew to a 24-hour restriction of movement in the affected towns. The clashes resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of properties, and displacement of residents.

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, explained that the governor relaxed the curfew. He did this to alleviate the suffering of residents. It provided an opportunity for them to attend to their immediate needs. Rasheed stated that the governor commended the cessation of hostility. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the report of another killing. The police have made an arrest in connection to it.

The governor also tasked the joint security task force to maintain 24-hour surveillance. Their goal is to ensure zero tolerance for any act of lawlessness. Additionally, the governor directed the state emergency agency to intensify support services for displaced people. The security measures are aimed at preventing further clashes and ensuring the safety of residents.

Governor Adeleke warned that anybody or group found masterminding violent acts will face the full consequences. The governor’s stance is clear. He has vowed to do everything in his power to maintain peace and order in the state.

The relaxation of the curfew has brought relief to residents. They can now move around and attend to their daily needs. However, many residents are still living in fear. The state government has assured them that everything is being done to ensure their safety.

The state government has started efforts to prevent future clashes. These efforts include setting up a committee to investigate the causes. The committee will recommend solutions. The government has also engaged in dialogue with community leaders and stakeholders to promote peace and understanding.

The relaxation of the curfew in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin communities is a welcome development. The state government’s efforts to maintain peace and order are commendable. However, more needs to be done to address the underlying causes of the clashes and prevent future occurrences.
