Morocco Partners Ogun State on Energy, Port Development

In a landmark ceremony, Ogun State and the Kingdom of Morocco have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on various sectors, including power generation and distribution, education, housing and infrastructure, port development, manufacturing and industrial development, and agriculture and agribusiness.

This historic partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development in Ogun State.

The signing ceremony, which took place at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, was attended by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the Executive Vice President, General Confederation of Employers in Morocco, Mr. Ali Zerouali. The MoU was signed by Governor Abiodun on behalf of Ogun State, while Mr. Zerouali signed on behalf of Morocco.

One of the key areas of collaboration is power generation and distribution. Ogun State aims to learn from Morocco’s expertise in hydro, solar, and gas energy to reduce the cost of energy in Nigeria. Governor Abiodun noted that Morocco has succeeded in perfecting its hydro, solar, and gas energy, which has brought down the cost of energy in the country. He expressed his desire to replicate this success story in Ogun State.

The partnership will also focus on technical and vocational education. Governor Abiodun emphasized the need to strengthen existing technical colleges to train Nigerian graduates. He noted that Morocco has made significant progress in technical and vocational education. Ogun State is eager to learn from its experience.

Ogun State plans to build more houses and transform towns into smart cities, with Morocco’s support. Governor Abiodun noted that despite the 5,000 houses built by his administration, there is still much to be done, hence the need for partnership in the housing sector.

The state has a designated port area called Olokola, which will be developed with Morocco’s assistance. Governor Abiodun expressed his desire to see the port constructed under his watch, even if it is a temporary berth port in the meantime.

Ogun State wants to team up with Morocco to set up an automobile industry. They also plan to bring manufacturing and agricultural companies to the state. Governor Abiodun noted that Morocco has excelled in manufacturing and industrial development, and Ogun State is eager to learn from its experience.

The partnership will explore opportunities in agricultural technology, fertilizer production, and agro-food industries. Governor Abiodun noted that Morocco is the largest producer of fertilizer on the continent. It is also one of the biggest exporters of fertilizer. He expressed his desire to establish a massive fertilizer plant in Ogun State.
