Nigeria’s reputation as a stable investment destination is at stake – ANPE
The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has issued a vehement condemnation of the recent declaration and approval of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
They have also submitted a request to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to rescind the decision and reinstate democratic governance in the state.
On Tuesday, March 18, President Tinubu announced a state of emergency in Rivers state due to the political crises and instability that has been plaguing the state.
Additionally, Tinubu placed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and other members of the Rivers assembly, under suspension for a term of six months.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who had previously served as Chief of Naval Staff, was also appointed by Tinubu to serve as the sole administrator for a period of six months.
On Thursday, March 20, the National Assembly adopted the proclamation and gave it its final approval.
Solomon Ola, the Global President of the Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE), issued a statement on Tuesday saying that he was deeply concerned by the suspension of elected officials.
Solomon described the move as being unconstitutional and detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic reputation.
Additionally, the group expressed their disapproval of the National Assembly, which is assigned with the responsibility of maintaining the Constitution and limiting presidential abuses, for failing to fulfill its duties.
The statement reads, “The suspension of elected officials without due process is a clear violation of democratic norms. Nigeria’s reputation as a stable investment destination is at stake.
“This arbitrary abrogation of constitutional procedures erodes trust in Nigeria’s dedication to democratic values, which discourages potential investors.
“The Nigerian Constitution provides legal processes for addressing grievances against elected officials, none of which includes the unilateral imposition of a state of emergency by the federal government.
“It is unfortunate that the National Assembly, which is tasked with upholding the Constitution and checking executive excesses, has failed in its duty. Their support for this blatant violation of constitutional norms is a disgrace to Nigerians in the diaspora.
“We in the diaspora have worked tirelessly to promote Nigeria as an investment-friendly nation, but this crisis has made our efforts difficult.
“The strength of our nation lies in our unity and commitment to democracy. President Tinubu must rectify this aberration to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic integrity and economic viability.”
