The Lesotho Football Association (LFA) has officially lodged a challenge with FIFA regarding South Africa’s use of midfielder Teboho Mokoena during last Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier.

This challenge to FIFA is rooted in claims that Mokoena was ineligible to participate due to a buildup of yellow cards

The LFA has argued FIFA, that South Africa should be stripped of the three points gained from their 2-0 victory over Lesotho, as Mokoena had received yellow cards in previous matches:

One in South Africa’s 2-1 win over Benin in November 2023 and another in their 3-1 victory against Zimbabwe in November 2024.

According to FIFA regulations, any player who accumulates two yellow cards in different matches is subject to a one-game suspension.

Mokoena’s appearance in the match against Lesotho has thus raised significant questions regarding adherence to these rules.

LFA secretary-general Mokhosi Mohapi confirmed that a letter has been sent to FIFA, outlining their concerns.

“The question is, was a rule broken? If yes, we are fully entitled to protest and get the points,” Mohapi was quoted.

He also noted, “We were made aware of Mokoena’s bookings and have sent a formal inquiry to CAF and FIFA.

We have heard that Nigeria also wants to protest, and they too are entitled to do so because the result prejudices everyone.

Suppose it was us who fielded an ineligible player and got the points—Bafana would have done the same.”

The ramifications of this situation could be substantial. Should FIFA rule in favor of Lesotho, South Africa could forfeit the three points from last week’s match, which would result in a 3-0 victory awarded to Lesotho.

This outcome would not only affect South Africa’s standing in the World Cup qualifying group but could also create an opening for other teams, such as Nigeria, to capitalize on the points adjustment. With the group dynamic still in play, any changes could significantly influence the chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup for all teams involved.
