In a major overhaul of its original plans, Australia has announced a new vision for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, featuring a state-of-the-art 63,000-seat stadium and a plush indoor swimming venue. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli revealed the updated plans, which include a new Brisbane Stadium in the heart of the city and an aquatic centre that can accommodate 25,000 fans.
The new stadium is expected to be a “world-class” venue, hosting not only Olympic events but also other major sporting events in the future. Meanwhile, the aquatic centre will boast temporary seating to increase its capacity to 25,000, making it an ideal location for swimming, diving, water polo, and other sports.
A New Plan for Brisbane 2032
The Queensland government has scrapped its previous plans, which included expanding the famous Gabba cricket ground and creating a new 17,000-seat indoor stadium. Premier Crisafulli emphasized that the old plan would have wasted “billions” on temporary facilities with no lasting legacy.
The new plan includes several key infrastructure projects, such as:
- Main Athletes’ Village: To be built at the existing Brisbane Showgrounds
- Smaller Villages: To be located on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast
- Upgrades to Smaller Venues: Including the Queensland Tennis Centre and Gold Coast Hockey Centre
Although the official costs are yet to be released, Australia has set aside around US$4 billion for Games infrastructure. With this new plan in place, Brisbane is poised to host an unforgettable 2032 Olympics experience.
