Former Rangers midfielder Scott Nathaniel Artfield has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers, backing him to become a mainstay in Scotland. Despite facing criticism, Dessers has been in impressive form for Rangers, scoring 22 goals across all competitions this season.

Artfield, who played for Rangers between 2018 and 2023, believes Dessers has been unfairly scrutinized and has more to give. “Cyriel Dessers – who gets a raw deal at times in my eyes – is nowhere near as bad as a player as some critics claim,” Artfield wrote in his column with the Daily Record.

Dessers’ omission from Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for the March International Break raised eyebrows, but Artfield’s endorsement is a timely boost for the striker. The former Cremonese striker has been vital in the UEFA Europa League for Barry Ferguson’s side, and his goalscoring form has been a bright spot in an otherwise challenging season for Rangers.

Artfield’s comments also highlighted the potential of Rangers midfielder Hamza, who has been hyped but has yet to fully deliver. However, the focus remains on Dessers, who will be looking to continue his impressive form and prove his doubters wrong.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, have thrived despite Dessers’ omission, sealing a 2-0 win over Rwanda last Friday. As the season enters its final stretch, Dessers will be looking to maintain his goalscoring form and help Rangers finish strongly.
