The leadership of the Nigeria Police is dedicated not only to maintaining law and order but also to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals

An order was issued to officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Sunday by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The instruction emphasized the need of respecting fundamental human rights when dealing with pre-trial detentions.

It was emphasized by Egbetokun that the rigorous adherence to legally prescribed detention durations is not only a legal necessity, but also a fundamental responsibility in the process of protecting the rights and dignity of individuals.

He made a reference to Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of Nigeria, which are provisions that safeguard the right to personal liberty and dignity.

Police Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi released a statement on behalf of the IGP, who issued a warning about the dangers of illegal or excessive detentions, saying that they could cause the public to lose faith in law enforcement.

The terrible repercussions that would befall any officer convicted of transgressing these legal and ethical norms were emphasized once again.

Egbetokun admonished his personnel to treat the public with the utmost respect and professionalism as he demanded an accountability culture inside the force.

The statementreads, “By prioritizing human rights, the Nigeria Police Force aims to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing is conducted with integrity and respect.

“The leadership of the Nigeria Police is dedicated not only to maintaining law and order but also to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.

“This renewed commitment aligns with broader efforts to reform the Nigerian policing system, ensuring it operates transparently, efficiently, and with full regard for human rights.”
