A coalition of human rights activists has taken action. Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu leads this effort. They have called for the immediate reversal of the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State. They cite gross human rights abuses and disregard for the rule of law. The group includes representatives from various civil society organizations. They addressed a press conference in Abuja. At the conference, they presented a damning report on the human rights situation in Rivers State.
The emergency rule, which was imposed on Rivers State by the Federal Government, has been in place for several months. However, according to the coalition, the rule has been used as a pretext for gross human rights abuses. These include arbitrary arrests, detention, and torture of innocent citizens. The group presented evidence of widespread human rights abuses, including videos and testimonies from victims.
Aisha Yesufu was a key figure in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. She called on the Federal Government to reverse the emergency rule immediately. She urged them to restore democratic governance in Rivers State. “The emergency rule has been used as a tool of oppression. It has not addressed the security challenges in the state,” Yesufu said. “We demand that the government reverses this rule. The people of Rivers State should enjoy their fundamental human rights.”
