Uncapped Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has expressed his admiration for Stanley Nwabali, the Chippa United shot-stopper who has risen to prominence in the Nigerian national team. Nwabali’s impressive performances during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s run to the final, have inspired Obasogie to follow in his footsteps.

Nwabali’s journey to becoming the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper has been nothing short of meteoric. With 17 appearances for Nigeria since his international debut in 2021, Nwabali has proven himself to be a reliable and skilled goalkeeper. His heroics during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept four clean sheets and saved two penalties in a shootout victory over South Africa, have cemented his place as one of the top goalkeepers in the Nigerian national team.

Obasogie, who received his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, has spoken about the inspiration he draws from Nwabali’s success. “I respect the effort Stanley Nwabali has put into claiming the number one shirt,” Obasogie told TheCable. “Remember he also proved himself in the NPFL before doing the same at Chippa United.”

Obasogie, who has been impressive in his club career, playing for Ethiopian side St. George FC, has expressed his desire to learn from Nwabali and the other experienced players in the Super Eagles’ squad. “Being in the Eagles camp is a huge opportunity for me. I respect all the players, and the experience improves me tremendously,” Obasogie said.

With Nwabali’s recent personal struggles, including the loss of both his parents, there were concerns about his mental state ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. However, Nwabali has since joined the Nigerian camp in Kigali, Rwanda, and is expected to play a crucial role in the team’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles, currently sitting fifth in Group C, face a tough challenge ahead, with matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. However, with Nwabali’s experience and Obasogie’s eagerness to learn, the team’s goalkeeping department is in good hands.
