The Rivers State Elders Council has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts to restore peace in the state. In a statement, the council commended the president’s visionary leadership and timely intervention in the Rivers State crisis, which had threatened governance and security.

The council recalled that President Tinubu’s initial intervention was misinterpreted and ridiculed, apologizing for not seizing the opportunity to address the state’s issues earlier. Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, urged the people of Rivers State to prioritize the state’s interest over personal or group sentiments.

A Call for Support

The council is calling on all Rivers State residents to support the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd), in his efforts to maintain peace and stability. This appeal comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for six months.

Background of the Crisis

The crisis in Rivers State began with the demolition of the state House of Assembly by Governor Fubara in December 2023. Despite a Supreme Court judgment ordering the restoration of the assembly, the situation remained unresolved, prompting President Tinubu’s emergency declaration.

As the situation unfolds, the Rivers State Elders Council’s endorsement of President Tinubu’s actions adds a new dimension to the debate. The council’s appeal for support and cooperation highlights the need for unity in addressing the state’s challenges.
