Bayern Munich‘s title hopes suffered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on Saturday. The result gives defending champions Bayer Leverkusen an outside chance of dragging themselves back into the Bundesliga title race.
A Game of Two Stories
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany described the game as “a game of two stories: the performance and the result.” He added, “I’ve been in football long enough to know this wasn’t a bad performance away from home.”
Bayern’s Struggles
Bayern had most of the ball but struggled to break through a resolute Union defence. Their best chance came after 51 minutes when Harry Kane drilled a free-kick through the wall but into the palms of Frederik Ronnow.
Sane Puts Bayern Ahead
Leroy Sane put the visitors ahead after 75 minutes when he skated through a crowded penalty area to tap in a Josip Stanisic pass. However, Union levelled through Benedict Hollerbach, who took advantage of an error from inexperienced goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
Union’s Strong Home Record
Despite hovering dangerously close to the relegation spots for much of the season, Union has a strong record at home against the league’s best sides. Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz, Freiburg, and now Bayern have all left Berlin without winning.
Other Bundesliga Results
In other Bundesliga results, Borussia Dortmund’s woes continued with a 2-0 loss at RB Leipzig, while Mainz and Freiburg drew 2-2. Borussia Moenchengladbach secured a 4-2 win at Werder Bremen, and Augsburg continued their impressive run with a 1-0 home win over Wolfsburg.
Bayern’s Title Hopes
Bayern’s draw at Union Berlin gives Bayer Leverkusen a glimmer of hope in the title race. Bayern will need to regroup and refocus to maintain their lead at the top of the table.
