The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reiterated its commitment to promoting women’s rights and equality.
Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho stated that the NPA gender equality will continue to create opportunities for women and girls within and outside the organization, empowering them to reach their full potential.
The NPA’s commitment to gender equality is reflected in its strategic approach to promoting women’s empowerment. The organization has implemented various initiatives aimed at bridging the gender gap and promoting equal opportunities for women and girls. These initiatives include:
- Extended Maternity Leave: Six months of maternity leave for women, ensuring they have adequate time to care for their newborns and recover from childbirth.
- Flexible Work Hours: Nursing mothers can report for duty an hour later and close an hour earlier than the official schedule, allowing them to balance work and family responsibilities.
- Leadership Roles: Women are in charge of key responsibilities at the authority, providing them with opportunities to develop leadership skills and contribute to decision-making processes.
- Empowerment Programs: NPA has implemented various programs aimed at empowering women and girls within and outside the organization, including training and capacity-building initiatives, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities.
The NPA participated in the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, themed “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.” Dr. Dantsoho emphasized that the NPA remains steadfast in promoting women’s rights and empowerment in Nigeria. The celebration provided an opportunity for the NPA to reaffirm its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, and to showcase its initiatives and achievements in this area.
The maritime industry is a male-dominated sector, and women face significant challenges in accessing employment and advancement opportunities.
However, the NPA recognizes the importance of promoting gender equality in the industry, and is working to address the barriers that prevent women from participating fully. By promoting gender equality, the NPA aims to:
- Increase Diversity: Promote diversity and inclusion in the maritime industry, recognizing the benefits of a diverse workforce.
Improve Productivity: Improve productivity and efficiency by tapping into the skills and talents of women.
Enhance Decision-Making: Enhance decision-making processes by incorporating diverse perspectives and experiences.
The NPA’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment is reflected in its strategic approach to promoting women’s rights and opportunities. By implementing initiatives aimed at bridging the gender gap and promoting equal opportunities, the NPA is working to create a more inclusive and diverse maritime industry.
As the organization continues to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, it is clear that the NPA is dedicated to creating a brighter future for women and girls in Nigeria.
