The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the formulation of its Election Project Plan (EPP) in preparation for the 2027 general election.

INEC election project plan development is a significant step towards ensuring the successful conduct of the elections, building on lessons learned from previous electoral experiences.

The EPP is a comprehensive document that outlines the commission’s strategies, timelines, and resources required for the conduct of general elections. The plan is designed to ensure that the commission is well-prepared to deliver free, fair, and credible elections. The EPP has been produced for previous general elections, including 2015, 2019, and 2023.

The commission is applying lessons learned from the 2023 general election to the planning process for 2027. The 2023 election presented several challenges, including logistical and technical hurdles, which the commission is working to address in the upcoming election cycle.

The commission faced difficulties in uploading presidential election results to the INEC Result Viewing portal, which were later resolved through software updates.

The formulation of the EPP involves strategic planning, which includes the production of the 2027 – 2031 Strategic Plan. This plan will replace the current 2022 – 2026 Strategic Plan, which ends in December 2026.

The new strategic plan will provide a framework for the commission’s activities, focusing on institutional strengthening, capacity building, and improved service delivery.

The EPP will include several key components, such as:

  • Election timelines: A detailed schedule of election-related activities, including voter registration, candidate nomination, and election day operations.
  • Resource allocation: A plan for the allocation of resources, including personnel, materials, and equipment.
  • Logistical arrangements:A plan for the deployment of election materials, transportation, and other logistical arrangements.
  • Security arrangements: A plan for the provision of security for election personnel, materials, and voters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to embark on the formulation of its Election Project Plan (EPP) for the 2027 general election demonstrates the commission’s commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections. By applying lessons learned from previous elections and engaging in strategic planning, the commission is well-positioned to conduct successful elections in 2027.
