Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has indicated that his team may need to deviate from their rigid tactics in order to secure a win against Arsenal in their upcoming London derby. The Italian manager has faced criticism for his side’s slow and methodical approach, which has led to frustration among fans.
Maresca’s tactics have been characterized by a focus on maintaining possession and slowing down the pace of the game. However, this approach has been questioned, particularly in their recent 1-0 win over Leicester, where Chelsea’s failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities led to audible frustration from the crowd.
The criticism continued in their 1-0 win over Copenhagen in the UEFA Conference League, with fans expressing discontent over the team’s lack of attacking flair. Maresca has previously stated that he would substitute players who fail to adhere to his tactical approach.
However, ahead of their crucial match against Arsenal, Maresca has acknowledged that his team may need to be more flexible in their approach. He recognizes that Arsenal’s high-pressing game may create opportunities for Chelsea to attack and catch their opponents off guard.
“The intention will be to control the ball, and if we are able to do that or not depends a lot on the opponent,” Maresca said. “They told me that Pedro Neto did a sprint in the 90th minute against Copenhagen. The reason why is that we were sitting back at the edge of our box.”
Maresca also revealed that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will start against Arsenal, having regained his place in the team after a series of costly mistakes led to him being dropped for four consecutive league games. Sanchez’s return to the starting lineup is a significant boost for Chelsea, and Maresca is hopeful that he will remain in goal for the remainder of the season.
“I think Robert needed some days off or at least rest mentally,” Maresca said. “He’s back, and hopefully, we are not going to change until the end of the season.”
