The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that four electricity transmission towers along the Owerri-Ahoada 132kV Double Circuit line have been vandalized, resulting in their collapse.
The Tower’s Collapse incident occurred on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at approximately 6:23 pm, and has disrupted power supply to the Ahoda, Gbarain, and Yenagoa 132kV transmission substations.
The collapse of the towers has plunged some parts of Rivers State and the entire Bayelsa State into darkness. The TCN has condemned the act of vandalism, stating that it undermines efforts to provide reliable electricity supply to Nigerians.
The TCN has mobilized a team of engineers, led by the General Manager of the Port Harcourt Region, Emmanuel Apka, to assess the extent of the damage. The company is making frantic efforts to repair the vandalized towers and restore power supply to the affected areas.
The TCN has emphasized the importance of security in protecting electricity infrastructure. The company has called on host communities to join forces with them in the fight against vandalism.
Vandalism of electricity infrastructure has severe consequences, including power outages, economic losses, and environmental damage. The TCN has urged Nigerians to report any cases of vandalism to the authorities.
The TCN has been working tirelessly to improve power supply in Nigeria. The company has implemented several initiatives, including the rehabilitation of existing transmission infrastructure and the construction of new projects.
In a related development, the TCN has inaugurated a Network Monitoring System Development Committee to enhance grid stability and mitigate power system disturbances. The committee’s primary objective is to design and implement an advanced monitoring system equipped with integrated data analysis and real-time operational awareness capabilities.
The Network Monitoring System will provide real-time visibility of the power grid, enabling the TCN to respond quickly to disturbances and minimize power outages. The system will also enable the TCN to optimize generation and transmission resources, reducing the risk of power system collapses.
The collapse of the electricity transmission towers in Rivers State is a setback to Nigeria’s power sector. However, the TCN is committed to restoring power supply to the affected areas and improving the overall reliability of the power grid.
