A lot of times, kidney disease tends to be asymptomatic. Asymptomatic means there are no symptoms.

World Kidney Day– Nigerians have been asked to make regular kidney exams a priority to assist early identification and treatment of kidney illness.

The move comes as the nation joined the rest of the world in observing World Kidney Day yesterday afternoon.

With the topic “Are Your Kidneys OK?,” Dr. Muyideen Orolu, a consultant nephrologist, emphasized the extremely important need for proactive testing by saying, “Detect early, protect kidney health.”

He was speaking at an event that was organized by nephrologists and held at the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Meta to commemorate Earth Day in Lagos.

Dr Orolu said, “The reason why the theme for this year is so germane is because a lot of times, kidney disease tends to be asymptomatic. Asymptomatic means there are no symptoms.

“Knowing your kidney means you need to actively find out about the state of your kidneys. Are your kidneys okay? So you need to find out. And the way to find out is by testing, because if we detect kidney diseases on time, then we can.”

He stressed that equating a healthy body with a healthy kidney is a dangerous misunderstanding. The disease can be prevented from progressing to stages that cannot be reversed by early discovery, which enables timely intervention.

Orolu emphasized the need to address risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, in addition to the importance of testing.

He encouraged people in Nigeria to keep a healthy weight and to ensure that they frequently monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

He advocated for enhanced collaboration between the government and the commercial sector in order to heighten public knowledge of renal health services and to make them more accessible to residents.

Both organizations were strongly encouraged by Orolu to make investments in programs that encourage routine checkups and educate the general public on the prevention of kidney disease.

To increase awareness about kidney illness and the importance of getting regular checkups, Orolu advocated for constant coordination between the government and the private sector at all times.
