Joshua Zirkzee struck the winning penalty as 10-man Manchester United defeated Arsenal in a dramatic FA Cup match to go to the fourth round.

United had to play with ten men for nearly an hour when Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for a mistimed tackle on Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino.

Manchester United seized the lead in the 52nd minute thanks to an amazing Bruno Fernandes goal, which came after Alejandro Garnacho took advantage of a Gabriel slip and crossed for Fernandes to curl the ball into the upper corner.

Dalot was sent off in the 61st minute for a reckless tackle, and Arsenal equalised two minutes later when centre-back Gabriel volleyed in from inside the area.

The Gunners then had a huge opportunity to grab the lead when Harry Maguire was adjudged to have brought down Kai Havertz in the box, and referee Andrew Madley awarded a penalty.

The spot-kick was delayed due to a scuffle in the box involving Maguire, Havertz, and Gabriel. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard then stepped up, but Altay Bayindir dove to his left to deflect the ball and preserve the score equal.

Mikel Arteta’s team had several chances to win the game, including ones from Declan Rice and Havertz, but they were unable to defeat the excellent Bayindir.

United were made to defend throughout extra time as Arsenal looked for ways to take the lead with their numerical advantage. But Arteta’s side could not find a way through and Havertz had his penalty saved by Bayindir before Zirkzee sent David Raya the wrong way to win the shootout.

The result means Arsenal have exited the FA Cup in the third round for the third time in four seasons.
