Pinnick Favored to Retain FIFA Council Seat

Nigeria’s Amaju Melvin Pinnick is favored to retain his seat as a member of the 37-person FIFA Council. Elections are being presently held at the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt.

Pinnick is competing against nine other candidates for the available five seats. CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, has retained his seat unopposed.

Africa has seven seats on the FIFA Council, with one seat reserved for a woman. CAF’s sitting Fifth Vice President, Kanizat Ibrahim, will compete against sitting member Isha Johansen for the female seat.

The contest for the FIFA Council seats is expected to be fierce, with several strong candidates vying for the available positions. Each of the 54 member associations will vote for five persons in the male category and one of the two women.

NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, will vote on behalf of Nigeria. The Federal Government has publicly endorsed Pinnick’s candidacy.

CAF President Motsepe said, “The successful conclusion of the championship highlights the depth of talent in African football and the effectiveness of the CAF’s developmental programs.”

The elections are being held at the Marriott Mena House in Cairo, with the results expected to be announced later today.
