Paris Saint-Germain edged Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout on Tuesday, advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals after the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate. Ousmane Dembele’s early strike had brought PSG level overall, canceling out Liverpool’s 1-0 lead from the first leg.

The match went into extra time after neither team could find a winner in regular time. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made two crucial saves in the penalty shootout, denying Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, while PSG converted all four of their spot kicks.

“We’re happy to be in the quarter-finals, but we know it will be a tough match against Aston Villa or Club Brugge,” PSG coach Christophe Galtier said.

Dembele’s opener in the 12th minute had given PSG a vital away goal, and despite creating several chances, Liverpool couldn’t find a way to level the scores on the night.

In the penalty shootout, Mohammed Salah scored Liverpool’s first kick, but Donnarumma saved Nunez’s effort, and Jones’ shot was also denied by the PSG goalkeeper. Vitinha, Ramos, and Dembele all converted their penalties for PSG, securing a 4-1 win in the shootout.

“We’re disappointed, but we have to be proud of our performance,” Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said. “We created chances, but we couldn’t take them.”

PSG’s victory sets up a quarter-final meeting with either Aston Villa or Club Brugge, while Liverpool’s Champions League campaign comes to an end
