Former Super Eagles defender Augustine Eguavoen has come out in support of Kelechi Iheanacho, who is reportedly facing uncertainty regarding his inclusion in the final Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Eguavoen believes it would be unfair to exclude Iheanacho from the final squad, considering he was initially included in the 39-man provisional list by coach Eric Chelle. The former KRC Genk star emphasized that dropping Iheanacho would be unjust, especially if the final squad is expanded beyond the usual 23-man list.
“It’s not fair on Kelechi Iheanacho if Eric Chelle makes a 39-man list and he isn’t involved. If it’s a 23 or 25-man list, that’s fine,” Eguavoen stated via MNF, as quoted by Brila Media.
Iheanacho, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough, has struggled to find game time under manager Michael Carrick. His recent form has been a concern, with the striker failing to score in his last five appearances for the club.
Despite this, Eguavoen’s comments highlight the importance of giving Iheanacho a fair chance to prove himself. The Super Eagles will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in crucial World Cup qualifiers, and Iheanacho’s experience and skills could be valuable assets to the team.
Coach Eric Chelle is expected to announce his final squad this week, with the team set to open camp in preparation for the upcoming matches. As the Super Eagles gear up for their World Cup qualifiers, the fate of Kelechi Iheanacho hangs in the balance, with many hoping that he will be given the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success.
