The highly anticipated trial of medical personnel involved in the care of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona commenced today in the nation’s capital.
Maradona, who passed away at age 60 from a heart attack in 2020, died while recovering at his home following surgery for a brain blood clot earlier that month.
Prosecutors claim that the football star’s death was preventable, alleging that the medical staff’s negligence contributed to the tragedy. They argue that lapses in care during his convalescence directly led to his fatal heart attack.
The defendants, however, maintain that Maradona declined additional treatment and insist he should have remained hospitalized longer after his procedure.
Facing charges of “homicide with possible intent,” the accused could be sentenced to between eight and 25 years in prison if found guilty.
The trial marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of one of football’s most celebrated figures.
