Tragedy struck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as a lone accident claimed the lives of four people and left nine others injured.

According to Mrs. Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, the crash was caused by a combination of speeding and a tyre burst, which led to a loss of control.

The accident involved 13 passengers, comprising five men and eight women.

While four people lost their lives, nine others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been prone to accidents in recent times, and this latest incident highlights the need for caution and adherence to traffic rules.

Speeding and tyre bursts are common causes of accidents on Nigerian roads, and the FRSC has been advocating for increased awareness and enforcement of traffic regulations.

In a statement released on Monday, Mrs. Florence Okpe, the FRSC spokesperson for Ogun, provided details about the incident.

The accident occurred at 8:30 p.m. and was attributed to speeding and a tyre burst, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle.

“The suspected causes of the lone crash were speed violation and a tyre burst, which led to loss of control.

The vehicle, marked FKJ 570 YE, crashed,” she noted.

Okpe further explained that a total of 13 passengers were involved in the crash, including five men and eight women.

Of those, two men and two women sadly perished, while three men and six women were injured.

The injured were transported to Victory Hospital, Ogere, whereas the deceased were taken to the FOS Morgue in Ipara.

In light of this incident, Sector Commander Akinwumi Fasakin urged motorists to maintain focus while driving and to routinely inspect their vehicles for any potential defects.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to the speed limits designated for different vehicle types while on the road.

Fasakin also called on fleet operators to equip their vehicles with speed limit devices and to prioritize safety in their operations.

As the investigation into the accident continues, the FRSC has urged motorists to exercise caution and patience while driving, especially on highways.

The agency has also called for increased vigilance and reporting of any hazards or incidents on the roads.

The accident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for collective responsibility to prevent such tragedies.
